Social Media: A Business Perspective

The internet has quite possibly been the greatest human achievement in history. If you think about it one of the most important differentiating factors between humans and other species’ is the level and modes of communication. Our ability to articulate wants, needs, feelings and opinions has been integral in growing civilization, and communication has never before been as important or as influential as it is in our current epoch.

So how does this relate to us going forward? Well social media is the answer right now. I feel as though social media is not only our current cultural proponent, but will be going forward for a long time, if not its current incarnation, a version there of. Social media has allowed us to document everything, and documentation is everything. Information is everything to a business owner and entrepreneur. The internet has not only greatly increased the amount of information available, but supercharged the speed of information gathering, processing and utilization. Thanks to social media, now marketers and entrepreneurs can get into the heads of the consumer, and tailor their products to a T. More than ever, anyone has the tools to succeed in almost any market and here's how.

Personalization.

More than anything consumers want you to understand what they specifically want or need. This requires research and all that but more than anything you need to know the person and not just their demographic. Understand that the effort put into knowing the person you're selling to, willingness to understand their needs, will bring more benefit to everyone involved than blanket marketing. This is exactly why advertisements are changing the way they are. The power of personalization is not as applicable to TV as it is to Facebook or Instagram. On TV there's no direct connection with the person you're advertising to. On Twitter, influencers, producers and retailers have a direct line of contact with anyone that is a client or a prospective client. This connection leaves a mark on the consumer. It allows any entity to have a personality if correctly utilized. This is the most powerful tool. The personality. An image, not just a brand, that regular people can relate to. This is the most powerful tool.

This is the future of business, the future of successful business. Anyone that isn't in the train will be left behind. So make sure you have your ticket handy.
